Oral history interview by Margaret Horsfield of Ken Conibear. He discusses how he became Grey Owl's manager for this 1937 British Tour; Lovat Dickson, Publisher, suggested to Ken Conibear that he team up with Grey Owl while he was on his second tour in Britain because he felt that they had similar backgrounds. He also discusses Grey Owl's main theme of his lectures which was to tell audiences about the joys of the North and his message about a better way of life in Canada as he presented the contrasts between Canada and the busy streets of England. He also talks about the booksellers that were present at each lecture, and that they would sometimes remain after the lecture for up to two hours to have Grey Owl sign his books and then sell them to those interested; his books consisted of Pilgrims of the Wild, Sajo and the Beaver People, and Tales of an Empty Cabin. Ken Conibear mentions that one of the major factors contributing to Grey Owl's success on tour in England is that the British public empathized with him when he spoke of animals. He also discusses what happened after Grey Owl's death; telegrams arrived in Fort Smith, NWT, where Ken Conibear lived, after the headlines had hit the newspapers that Grey Owl was a fraud who during his lifetime had five wives; people were curious and wanted to know the truth about Grey Owl; sadly he was discredited for many years. He also shares his knowledge about Grey Owl's war service, the impact he had on people towards trapping, fox hunting in Britain, and an anecdote about Grey Owl arriving in New York City after the British Tour. <43mn 51s>
