The accession consists of photographs relating to conservation of natural resources in Canada and the United States, collected by the Canadian Commission of Conservation during its years of existance, 1909 to 1921.

Subjects include forestry surveys and inventories of forest resources in Canada, organized by the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and by the states of Idaho, Montana, New York and Wyoming. Included are two card-format keys to the arrangement and classification of the photographs by provinces and states.

Subjects also include barns, cattle, crops, farms, fertilization, gardens, grain, houses, implements, labour, orchards, pastures, poultry, roads, seed selection and treatment, water supply, and weeds, organized alphabetically and partially identified as taken in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

All photographs have captions, some are dated, and some have references of having been used in various publications, including "Handbook for Farmers" (1918), "Rural Planning and Development" (1917), "Rural Planning and Development" (1917), "Forest Protection in Canada, 1913-1914", Trent Watershed Survey, 1913, "Conservation", and Commission of Conservation Annual Reports nos. 4 to 8 and 10.

General note:

The Canadian Commission on Conservation, established in 1909 and abolished in 1921, was an independent, fully nonpartisan advisory body with a mandate to collect and disseminate information on any matter considered by its members to be related to conservation and to make recommendations to Parliament on the efficient development and conservation of natural resources. The Commission reported directly to Parliament and had no executive or administrative powers. It was divided into committees, Public Health, Forests, Waters, Lands, Minerals, and Game, which were tasked with compiling accurate inventories of the resources for which each was responsible.
