Documentary radio program by CBC Northern Services commemorating the 40th anniversary of the opening of the beginning of the Alaska Highway from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Dawson Creek, British Columbia (December 20, 1942). The program consists of narrative segments by Les McLaughlin and interviews with historians who detail the joint American-Canadian discussions throughout the 1920's and 30's which culminated in the construction of the "Alcan Military Highway" (as it was first called) by American soldiers of the 18th Corps of Engineers and 16,000 civilians - a 2333 km road crossing five mountain ranges in less than one year. Among the historians heard are: David Remley, author of "Crooked Road: The Story of the Alaska Highway", and John Greenwood, chief historian for the United States Corps of Engineers. Throughout the program are the voices of the men who built the highway recalling the harsh living conditions, the isolation and the difficulties presented by the permafrost, muskeg and the mountainous terrain. The broadcast closes with excerpts of the November 20, 1942 CBC radio broadcast of the official opening ceremonies of the highway held at Soldier's Summit, Yukon, in which commentators Peter Stursberg and J. Frank Willis interview the first American serviceman to drive the length of the completed highway and describe the flag-raising and ribbon-cutting ceremonies amidst the roar of the first of many truck convoys to follow on the route to the North.
