Peck, Jean-P. Gratton, Hector, 1900-1970 : Composer, conductor, arranger, pianist and teacher born in Hull (Quebec), Hector Gratton studied piano with Michel-Alphonse Martin and Alfred La Liberté, and counterpoint with Alfred Whitehead. A student of composer and folklorist Oscar O'Brien, Hector Gratton was also interested in the harmonizing of folk songs. Based on national songs and dances, his work features compositions of all genres. The best known are: Légende (symphonic poem, Jean Lallemand prize in 1937), Danses canadiennes and Imagerie (radio play by author Cécile Chabot). In the early days of public radio, he composed and conducted the incidental music for several programmes including Je me souviens and Sur le pont d'Avignon.
