The fonds consists of records documenting the work of the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada in promoting the health and career interests of Aboriginal people. This work includes providing information and support to those people of Aboriginal ancestry interested or involved in nursing and other health careers. The essential structure which the organization set for its records, focussing on type of record and activity, is retained. Textual records relating to structure and support services include correspondence with legal, accounting, and consulting firms, as well as with ANAC membership; materials relating to employment; administrative and personnel records; minutes of meetings and reports of the ANAC Executive and Board of Directors; and also financial documents. Other textual records relate to service to and information for members; projects and proposals; questionnaires and surveys; scholarship applicants' records; reports and other material related to ANAC assemblies and annual general meetings; other conference, workshop, and meeting information; ANAC and other newsletters, as well as records of commemorative events. Thirty-one posters, most on health issues, comprise a series. A general health series includes reports and correspondence on various topics; some topics, such as traditional medicine, appear in multiple areas and series. Series on specific issues deal with diabetes, AIDS, child abuse, and family violence. Textual records that reflect relations with other organizations are comprised of correspondence and other material from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organizations, educational institutions, nurses' associations, Medical Services Branch of Health Canada, and other federal government departments.

There is a gap in ANAC annual general meetings, with no information for 1998. No records are available for Board and/or Executive meetings, 1985 and 1998. Gaps exist in contribution agreements for 1984 and 1998. There is a gap in general conference materials for 1994, and also a gap in Baxter scholarship information and correspondence for 1995.

Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada : In response to growing concerns over the health and well-being of Aboriginal people, two nurses of Aboriginal ancestry conceived the development of an Aboriginal professional nurses' association in 1974. After much networking to contact potential members, forty individuals met in Montreal in 1975 to launch the association of the Registered Nurses of Canadian Indian Ancestry (RNCIA). This association was incorporated in 1976. In 1978 Grace Easter of the Manitoba Indian Nurses Association became President of the RNCIA, and the organization's head office was established in Winnipeg. In 1982, after Jean Goodwill was elected President, the head office moved to Ottawa. In 1983, the name of the organization changed to the Indian and Inuit Nurses of Canada (IINC) to include all nurses of Aboriginal ancestry. In 1989, IINC became an affiliate member of the Canadian Nurses Association. In 1992, their name changed again to the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada (ANAC). ANAC is the only Aboriginal professional nurses' association in Canada (2005).

ANAC's executive structure consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from the provinces and territories of Canada. General membership in ANAC includes associate, regular, student, and honorary members.

Objectives of the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada include to promote better physical, social, mental, and spiritual health for Aboriginal people; to conduct studies on Aboriginal health, medicine, and culture; and to develop means of recruiting more people of Aboriginal ancestry into the health professions. The association also strives to maintain a consultative mechanism with band governments and other agencies concerned with Aboriginal health issues. Furthermore, it aims to develop and encourage courses in the education system on nursing, the health professions, Aboriginal health and cross-cultural nursing. It seeks to generally develop and maintain on an ongoing basis, a registry of Aboriginal Registered Nurses. It also seeks to encourage and facilitate Aboriginal control of Aboriginal health, and to promote general awareness in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities of the special health needs of Aboriginal people.
