This is the first part of a two-part radio documentary tracing the development of the New Democratic Party. This program is an examination, through interviews, of the political and organizational evolution of Western Canada during the first three decades of this century. It covers the rise and fall of the Progressive Party, the Wheat Pool Movement and other joint economic action by Western Canadian farmers. It includes the following interviews: Tom Johnson about the 16-hour work day by farmers in the early 1900s on the prairies; John Bracken about the early settlment of immigrants on poor land; Mrs. Amelia Smith about life in the early settlement days in the West; J.H. Whesson, Henry Spencer, George Erwin and Ernie Cook about the Grain Growers Grain Company; E.C. Drury about farmer protests held in Ottawa and the formation of the United Farmers of Ontario; a woman speaking about the formation of a United Farm Women's local in 1918; old Prairie farmers about the rise of farmer political organizations and hard times after the First World War; Saskatchewan farm leader Walter Wiggins about the situation after the First World War; E.C. Drury about the United Farmers of Ontario election victory in 1919; Harran Baker, Alberta Minister of Education from 1921 to 1935, Henry Young and Senator Cameron, about the United Farmers of Alberta in 1921 and the nature of this party; Douglas L. Campbell, former Premier of Manitoba, and John Bracken, head of the 1922 Farmers' government, about the victory of the United Farmers of Manitoba in 1922; Arthur Beaubien, R.A. Howie and Henry Spencer, about the success of Progressive Party candidates in 1921, the issues that led to the formation of the party and the 1921 victory; Mr. Wesson and F. Walter Crawford about the 1925 federal election and William Lyon Mackenzie King's attempts to lure the Progressives into the Liberal Party; old farmers remembering the 1920s and 1930s and the start of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF); and M.J.
