The accession consists of two hundred and twenty one (221) drawings by Canadian artist and Group of Seven member Alexander Young Jackson (1882-1974), many of which are worked on both sides. Subject matter includes: studies/views of Arctic scenery; landscape, townscape and country views of various locations in Quebec, Ontario, the Prairie Provinces, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon (including Alaska Highway construction scenes); maritime scenes (i.e. lakes and rivers); industrial scenery; studies of plants/vegetation, wild animals (i.e. moose) and domestic animals (i.e. dogs, horses, ox); sketches/studies of various man-made objects (i.e. horse-drawn sleighs/carriages, buildings, furniture, ships and other types of water craft, etc.) as well as sketches of native Indian camps. Included in the above are some illustration works such as: pencil drawings for the book "A.Y. Jackson / The Arctic 1927" [introduction by Naomi Jackson Groves]; a pen and ink drawing for the book "Chez Nous / Our Old Quebec Home" by Adjutor Rivard and pencil drawings of Haymarket Square, Montreal for Henry Beston's book "St. Lawrence". The drawings provide an overview of the artist's creative output during a forty year period, specifically his "notes" and studies for his oil sketches and canvases. They also document the artist's sketching trips throughout various parts of Canada during his long productive career, especially his work in Quebec, Western Canada and the Arctic.

Note on the state of conservation:

The overall condition of these drawings, for the most part, is very good. However, some of the works will require conservation or restoration treatment for things such as small edge tears, creases, minor paper losses, surface dirt/grime, and paper acidity. The main body of the works will require only normal conservation measures to ensure their long-term preservation.

Custodial history:

Drawings passed by descent directly from the artist to his niece, Dr. Naomi Jackson Groves and from her to her two sisters, Geneva (Jackson) Baird and Constance (Jackson) Hamilton Strange.
