This sub-series consists of records relating to the various types of historical preservation that occurred at CN during the mid 20th century, and can be broken down into three broad categories of subjects.

The first subject category relates to the Historical Research Section, and includes records relating to the historical research work by Colonel G.R. Stevens on the history of CN and its subsidiary and constituent companies. In general, this set of records covers the period from 1948-1960, and also to a lesser extent in the mid to late 1970s. (Volumes 17437-17438; 17442-17443)

The second subject category relates to the Historical Preservation Program, and includes records on to the preservation of and potential donation of heritage rolling stock (including locomotives) to various museums, notably the National Museum of Canada (later known as the Museum of Science and Technology) and the Canadian Railway Historical Association (later known for its facility called Exporail). In general, this set of records covers the period from late 1950s to the early 1970s. (Volume 17439)

The third subject category relates to the Archival Program, and records on the creation of the archival records program at CN. Included here is documentation on the genesis of the historic memorandum of agreement with the then Public Archives of Canada (in January 1963), and the subsequent transfers of archival material to the national archives. Included is correspondence between CN Archivist John L. Andraeesen and Dominion Archivist W.K. Lamb (notably from September 1962 through February 1963), meeting minutes of the Committee for the Preservation of Historical Records, drafts of the MOU between CN and PAC, and detailed documentation on the first 3 years of transfers of archival material to the national archives 1963-1966 (there is also documentation on later transfers through to the 1970s). This set of records covers the period from ca. 1960 to 1978, with 1962-1968 predominant. (Volumes 17440-17442)

Andreassen, John L : John L. Andreassen was born in Bloomer, Wisconsin, and studied at Tulane, Wisconsin (Ph.B., 1931) and Louisiana State (M.A., 1935) Universities. His career as an archivist began in 1937 with his appointment as regional director of the Historical Records Survey of Louisiana. He supervised service projects for the Work Projects Administration from 1941 to 1943, and from 1943 to 1950, he was the administrative officer of the Federal Works Administration. As a displaced persons specialist for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (UNRRA), he worked in London (1944-1945), Sweden (1945), and on a relief mission to Austria (1945-1946). From 1946 to 1952, Andreassen was Director of Administration of the Library of Congress and held the chair of aeronautics there from 1952 to 1953. He returned to Louisiana to become Associate Director of the state archives survey (1955-1956), and later, Director of the Louisiana Archives and Records Commission (1958-1960). After completing a paperwork survey for the New Orleans government (1961), Andreassen came to Montréal as archivist of the Canadian National Railway. He has also acted as a consultant in archives administration as a partner in the Records Management Company, Montréal. From 1968 until his retirement in 1977, he was McGill University Archivist. Andreassen was one of the founders of the Society of American Archivists and of the Montreal Chapter of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators.
