Sub-series consists of war tax stamps issued by the Post Office Department and the Department of Inland Revenue between 1915 and 1916. These include both postage stamps overprinted to indicate they are meant to be used for the war tax and stamps created explicitly for use for the war tax. The first issuing of war tax stamps coincided with the creation of the Special War Revenue Act in February 1915. The act added a one cent tax to the shipment of mail within Canada. At first, this tax was paid through a special stamp that was used in addition to the standard postage rate. To avoid confusion between the regular postage stamps and the war tax stamps, combined stamps which covered both costs were issued. The sub-series also contains war tax stamps in increments of five cents, twenty cents, and fifty cents that were issued for fiscal purposes. These were primarily used for a war tax on wine that also began in February 1915.
