Sub-series consists of registration stamps issued by the Post Office Department in 1875. Registration for letters was first introduced in Nova Scotia in 1851. For an extra fee, the sender was given a receipt and the addressee would sign for the letter when it was delivered. Other provinces adopt this system in the following years and it is carried forward after confederation. In 1875, mandatory registration stamps were issued to allow for the prepayment of the registration fee and to make registered mail more easily identifiable. The use of registration stamps ended in 1893, when the post office began using regular postage stamps for both the mailing and registration fees.
