In this interview with Grace Lydiatt Shaw, Hugh Mills describes his career in theatre and radio, and comments on the developments he has witnessed in Halifax theatre, radio and television. The early touring and repertory companies like those of Sir John Martin-Harvey. Francis [Glossup-Harris] and Sydney Toller and Jane Morgan form Mills earlier memories. Later in the interview he remembers the World War One concert party (variety troupe) the Dumbells. Next Mills describes his involvement in amateur theatre, with the Halifax Dramatic and Musical Club from 1923 to 1927. He joined the Dalhousie Little Theatre in 1931. Among the many people and places connected with the amateur theatre is [Mr. Piggott], the Little Theatre director for 27 years. From 1932 until 1952 Mills was CBC Halifax's radio "Uncle Mel". He also describes the World War Two shows he took part in, including the Halifax Herald's Uncle Mel's Players. In conclusion, Mills speaks on such issues as the Canada Council, regional theatre, theatre training and the effect of television on theatre.
