Item is a transcription of a letter from John Norton to Reverend John Owen, Grand River, 12 August 1806.

With a wrapper with original inscription, "Copies J Norton to J Owen Aug 1806 + Indian speeches 23 July 1806 to Col. Clause" (see R18372-3-6).

Norton discusses the "settlement of the Chippewas" [Ojibwe or Anishinaabe] and his ideas to develop it. He complains about the Indian Department and its agents (distribution of goods). He talks about the situation of the "Ottawas" [Odawas] and the "Poutewattomies" [Pottawatomie]. He is seeking for ways to improve the life of Indigenous communities through agriculture, industry, religion and the education of the youth. He advocates for compensations for older and wounded "warriors", etc.
