Item is an autograph journal written by John Norton Teyoninhokarawen between 1806 and 1808. It is a retrospective narrative of his journey to England and Scotland in 1804-1805, in the form of letters to a friend. Norton, then Chief of diplomacy and war for the Six Nations, made this voyage at the request of Joseph Brant Thayendanegea to clarify land ownership issues related to the Haldimand Grant (October 25, 1784) on the Grand River (Ontario). He also wanted to join the British army and reconnect with his maternal relatives in Scotland.

The structure of the journal is chronological. It starts in March 1804, in Albany, New York, and ends in August 1805 in Portsmouth, England. There are some errors in the dates. For example, 1807 is often inscribed instead of 1804, or 1808 instead of 1805, which testifies to the fact that Norton wrote it after his return.

Individuals are often designated by initials or Mohawk names given by Norton (two useful indexes/glossaries accompany the journal).

The journal was sent by Norton to his friend Robert Barclay, in England, who had plans to publish it but the project never materialized.
