This film describes the various duties of a Royal Canadian Air Force technical officer and the careers available to graduates of university engineering and science programs. It begins with shots of RCAF planes flying overhead and footage of pilots and aircraft on the ground. Aircraft shown include a plane marked VN101. A Sabre jet is shown later in the film. The RCAF is a major employer in Canada and spends approximately $1 billion a year on new equipment and operating costs. Training as an RCAF technical officer begins with 9 weeks of study about the RCAF No. 1 Officers' Training School in London, Ontario. Then the officer goes to more specialized training. Officers specializing in communications study at the Radar and Communications School in Clinton, Ontario, where training is given in subjects such as Morse code, microwave, radar, long range search radar and Neptune submarine hunter equipment. Other technical officers receive training in the maintenance of jet and piston engine aircraft. RCAF technical officers carry out various specialized tasks, such as supervising the installation of equipment, keeping a log of every aircraft and liaison with aircraft manufacturers. The mobile equipment branch is responsible for maintaining the equipment necessary to keep runaways clear of snow and footage shows snow plows clearing snow. The branch is also responsbile for the mobile firefighting equipment, special vehicles used for experimental work and tenders used for refuelling. The construction engineering branch employs technical officers responsible for the specifications for hangars, airfields and other air force facilities, although the actual construction is carried out by private-sector contractors. Other RCAF technical officers work on improving the firepower of aircraft such as the rockets used the CF-100. Other duties include the alignment and testing of aircraft guns. There is footage of explosions from weapons fired from aircraft. There is also time for sports activities at air force stations. Footage shows people swimming in a pool, playing tennis and sailing. Technical officers also work for the aeronautical engineering branch. Technical officers may be employed in Canada or at RCAF stations in England, France or Germany. The film closes with footage of aircraft taking off and an officer in the control tower. <11mn 32s>
