This fonds consists of two photo albums of black and white photos taken by Major Leonard Ernest Silcox (1881-1966). L.E. Silcox was a location/site engineer for many years on the Canadian Pacific, Grand Trunk Pacific and Hudson Bay railways. The two photo albums contain 700 photographs showing survey teams and construction activities of both the Grand Trunk Pacific and Hudson Bay Railways including in many instances a typed narration. The photos cover the period from 1903-1916.

Each album shows landscapes and railway survey and construction activities in Western Canada. There are minimal descriptions, with some highlights as follows:

Silcox, Leonard Ernest : Leonard Ernest Silcox was born Wales, articled in London, and came to Canada in ca. 1902-1903, and worked as a topographer and leveller first for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, followed by survey work for the Canadian Pacific Railway, followed by survey work for the Hudson Bay Railway. In 1916, Silcox was enlisted in the Canadian army, serving various battalions of the Canadian Railway Troops in France, finishing as an Acting Lieutenant Colonel. He was discharged in 1919. After the war, he went back to Canada but because working in cold temperatures had affected his lungs, he was advised to seek a warmer climate. He therefore moved to Africa and worked in the Gold Coast, now Ghana, until about mid 1930s, again on railways and port facilities.
