Fonds consists of oil paintings which span Coburn's career. Most of the paintings are illustrations for Louis Fréchette's "Christmas in French Canada" (Toronto, 1899): "Our Days Passed in Continual Travel", "Clasped the Insensible Wood", "We were Somewhat Late in Arriving at St. Joachim", "All Pierre's Couplets and Refrains were gone Through", "Christening the Christmas Log", "I bring you back a little saint", "Tom Cariboo began to Descent", "Looked like a fritter out of the frying pan", "Beyond the Pointe-aux-Baptemes, God is nowhere", "Look here, Joachim, if you want a place in my berlot there is one for you", "And he fell on his knees", Lumber camp Illustration, Doctor at Bedside Illustration, Dog sled team, "Maurice tried to resume his speech", Winter Harvest, and painting of a winter scene with horses at a watering trough.

Coburn, Frederick Simpson, 1871-1960 : Frederick Simpson Coburn was born in Upper Melbourne, Quebec in 1871. He died in the same village in 1960. In 1887-1888, Frederick Simpson Coburn studied at the Conseil des arts et Manufactures in Montreal. The following year, he went to Germany, where he enrolled at the Berlin Academy. In 1892, he was in Paris taking courses at the École des Beaux-Arts in Gérôme's studio. He also attended art schools in New York, London and Antwerp. He married and worked there for twenty years. Upon his return to Canada in 1913, Coburn set up a studio in Melbourne, where he worked for forty years. He was made a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1920. His paintings appeared regularly in American magazines, and he illustrated many works by American, English and Canadian authors for G.P. Putman Publishing of New York. In the 1910s, he developed a reputation for his winter landscapes, and he achieved a high level of success as a Canadian artist. He is most well-known for his rural landscape of the Eastern townships.
