Oral history interview by Donald Brittain, Canadian filmmaker, of Charles Ritchie, former ambassador in the Canadian foreign service. Ritchie discusses post WWII Canadian foreign policy in light of U.S. McCarthyism. Topics include the impact of the Gouzenko revelations within the government; the cold war diplomacy of the U.S.S.R.; insight into the decision-making process in Ottawa concerning foreign affairs; the Official Secrets Act and the Freedom of Information Act.

1. This interview was used by Gary Marcuse in the Radio documentary THE COLD WAR IN CANADA, broadcast on CBC "Ideas" as a four part series in 1984 and repeated in 1985.~2. As this conversation was being filmed, later dubbing (Nov. 1983) results in a fragmented interview. The first half only of the 10" tape and all of the 5" tape (marked miscellaneous) pertain to Ritchie.~3. More documentation available in collection file.
