Fonds consists of photographs which document the first train on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway between Winnipeg, Manitoba and its arrival in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, on April 9th, 1914. Photographs depict members of the official party and crew of the train arranaged on Engine 112, preparation and driving of the last spike, and several landscape views along the G.T.P. and of the Skeena River Valley.

Second album consists of photographs which document Official tour of Sir C. Rivers Wilson, G.C.M.G, C.B., president Grand Trunk Railway System and Mr. Chas. M. Hays, president Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, directors and officials over Grand Trunk Railway lines August & September 1909. This album of 78 pages is red leather bound in golden letters on the cover and has the inscription "Mr. E.J. Chamberlin", we can assume that it was given to this man. GTPR's visit of cities include: St.Paul, St.Clair Tunnel Power House, Port Huron, Minnesota; Battle Creek, Michigan; Medora, Dickenson, North Dakota; Paradise, Silesia, Thompson Falls, Montana; Yakima Valley, Spokane, Seatle, Washington; Stratford, Sarnia, Fort William, Sault Ste. Marie, Port Hope, On.; Victoria, Indian villages at Alert Bay, Prince Rupert, Skeena River, Ashcroft, Vancouver, Revelstoke, Selkirk Mountains, B.C.; Edmonton, Wainwright, Alta; Qu'Appelle Valley, Biggar, Punnichy, Saskatoon, Earl, Portage La Prairie, Assiniboine Valley, Melville, Sask.; Lazare, Rivers, Winnipeg, Man.

Donaldson, Morley, 1851-1918 : Morley Donaldson was born near Edinburgh, Scotland and came to Canada as a young boy. In 1869 he joined the Montreal engineering firm of E.E. Gilbert & Sons. Between 1871 and 1876 Donaldson worked for Walter Shanly, the chief engineer and contractor for the Hoosac Tunnel in Massachusetts. Following this, Donaldson became a mining engineer and assayer in Colorado for four years. Returning to Canada in 1881, he became chief draftsman for J.R. Booth's railway, the Canada Atlantic Railway, which connected Ottawa to New England. Donaldson also served as mechanical and general superintendent for the Canada Atlantic.

When the Canada Atlantic was bought by the Grand Trunk Railway in 1905, Donaldson became superintendent of the Ottawa Division of the GTR. He retained this position until 1913 when he became vice-president and general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, then building a railway line to the Pacific Ocean. He resigned in 1917 due to ill health.

Custodial history:

Acquired from Vera Campbell at the Bytown Historical Museum, Ottawa, Ontario. Second album dated from 1909 was acquired in 2001 from Norman Bellows, photographs and books dealer, Rochester, NY, USA.
