Documentary of the completion of the first Arctic survey where airplanes were used in a gold rush. Knowles-Breakell congratulates pilot F. 1. The first aircraft facility to be established in Botwood was by Newfoundland-born Captain Sydney Bennett (1897-1945) and Australian-born Major Sidney Cotton (1894-1969). ~2. Royal Air Force (RAF) flying office Thomas Knowles Breakell resigns from the service to live in Newfoundland. The G-EARV flying machine was sold to Sidney Cotton of Sidcot, and used by him as a spotter with the Newfoundland sealing fleets. Piloted by T.K. Breakell, G-EARV was used in a gold-rush to a reported strike at Stag Bay, Labrador, where landing on thin ice on the shore of the bay, the pilot had to keep taxiing to prevent the machine from sinking. G-EARV pioneered air transport in Newfoundland when it was operated by the Aerial Survey Company (Newfoundland) Ltd. It was used for seal and fishery spotting including being used on skis. The company operated in Newfoundland until the end of 1923 carrying mail and passengers to remote outposts. http://theauxiliaries.com.~3.
