Public Prosecution Service of Canada : The Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) was created on December 12, 2006, when the Federal Accountability Act (S.C. 2006, c. 9), enacting the Director of Public Prosecutions Act (S.C. 2006, c. 9, s. 121), received royal assent.

The PPSC is a national authority that prosecutes criminal offences on behalf of the Government of Canada. The PPSC carries out the functions of the former Federal Prosecution Service of the Department of Justice as well as additional responsibilities for offences under the Financial Administration Act and the Canada Elections Act. It was established as an independent authority to ensure that the prosecution function is transparent, independent, and free from political influence.

The PPSC is headed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, who acts as Deputy Attorney General of Canada. The Director reports to Parliament through the Attorney General of Canada, and acts under the authority of, and on behalf of, the Attorney General.

The PPSC's primary objectives are to prosecute criminal and regulatory offences under federal jurisdiction, and to provide legal advice to law enforcement and investigative agencies. The PPSC is not an investigative agency; its prosecutions are the result of investigations conducted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, other federal investigative agencies, and provincial and municipal police forces.

The PPSC has headquarters in Ottawa, as well as regional and local offices across Canada.
