The fonds consists of ca. 5000 photographs created by Montreal-based photographers Mia and Klaus Matthes. The collection includes an important number of portraits of well-known French Canadian artists from the 1970's and 1980's like: Jean-Paul Riopelle, Marcelle Ferron, Yvette Froment, Guido Molinari, Guy Montpetit, Rita Letendre, Jean Paul Lemieux, Carole Simard-Laflamme, Léo Gervais, Fabienne Thibault, Gilles Vigneault, Louise Forestier, Claude Léveillée, Jean-Pierre Ferland, Yvon Deschamps, Marcel Barbeau, Léon Bellefleur, Michel Rivard, Diane Dufresne, Marie Tifo, Alfred Pellan, Stanley Cosgrove, among others.

The collection also comprises photographs of Indigenous communities in Northern Quebec (Kangirsuk, Kuujjuaq, Kuujjuarapik, Umiujaq, Ivujivik and Inukjuak); Canadian industry (Gentilly nuclear plant, La Grande 1-2-3 hydroelectrics, methane extraction plants, salt mines, coal mines, etc.) and healthcare institutions in Montreal (Montreal Protestant Hospital, Montreal Extended Care Centre, St-Charles Borromée Hospital and Comité provincial des maladies).

Custodial history:

The collection was purchased from Mia Matthes in 2001 by Hemera Technologies. In 2004, Hemera Technologies was acquired by Jupiterimages, which is itself a subsidiary of Getty Images. Library and Archives Canada received the donation directly from Getty Images International in 2021.
