Television documentary which takes a look at the effects of socialist democratic reforms in Czechoslovakia just prior to the Soviet invasion of 1968. Footage traces the country's history with clips of: 1918 president and founder Tomas Masaryk; the succeeding president Eduard Benes; British prime minister Neville Chamberlain and French premier Edouard Daladier signing away Sudetenland territories to Hitler's Germany under the Munich agreement of 1938; occupation by Nazi troops during World War II; re-enactment of Reinhard Heydrich's assasination in Prague in 1942; footage of the fields; ruins of the village of Lidice razed by the Nazis in retaliation. Additional film clips include: scenes in and around the now deserted Theresein Stadt concentration camp in Bohemia; Soviet armies liberating Prague at the end of World War II; prime minister Klement Gottwald and a 1948 mass meeting of workers in Wenceslas Square. Restricted freedoms prior to the reforms are commented on by: novelist Josef Skvorecky; film director Milos Forman; writer Alena Bernischkova; and a group of Roman Catholic intellectuals all of whom formerly served time for alleged espionage and treason. Shots of the presidential palace and Jewish cemetery in Prague, St.Charles Cathedral and comments from Roman Catholic Bishop Tomasek in July 1968. In the second part of the program, changes that have occurred since the Stalinist regime are discussed. Scenes of: an outdoor beer garden; street scenes in Bratislava; housing construction in Prague; luxury goods and queues for travel visas; crowds at the Masaryk gravesite. Comments from Jiri Pelikan, director of Czech television; scientist Josef Kort(?) on the influence of the media and the possibility of military intervention.~Clips of Czech dancers are ironically intercut with shots of military tanks in the streets and scenes from the Soviet invasion which effectively ended Czechoslovakia's experiment in Socialist democracy and occurred a month after filming for DOCUMENT.
