This five-part film outlines the history and methods of copper mining from early prospecting in the Copper River Valley, Alaska, to modern mine development in Alaska and elsewhere in the United States. Part One includes a fictional re-enactment of a copper discovery and small mine development in Alaska. Parts Two through Five show modern mining methods: quarrying on Sacramento Hill at Bisbee, Arizona, including a shot of the hill before development began; open pit mining at Ruth, Nevada and at Jerome, Arizona where smoldering ore from a years-old mine fire is shovelled out; shrinkage stoping at Kennecott, Alaska; glacier mining in Alaska; the caving system at Ray, Inspiration, and Miami in Arizona and in a northern Michigan mine; mining for veins at Butte, Montana; and quarrying at Bingham Canyon, Utah. Footage also includes shots of milling operations at Kennecott and a sequence on the quality of life in a mining town including shots of company-sponsored social clubs, recreation facilities, sporting events, and hospitals. <47mn>
