This sub-series includes the backlog material that was either unprocessed or only partially processed by the Pierre E. Trudeau PMO Correspondence Division.

About 75% of this material dates from 1975 and probably can be attributed to the Correspondence Division's preparations for the introduction of the revised classification system in April 1976.

Other material seems to have been retained by correspondence analysts or other staff members and was simply not integrated when finally returned to the Correspondence Division.

The various sub-sets of backlog material can be summarized as follows:

1968 BACKLOG (Vols. 734-736)

This material dates from April 1968 and Trudeau's transition from the Minister of Justice to Prime Minister. Much of the material relates to his campaign for the Liberal leadership. Most of the correspondence is arranged alphabetically.

1968-1969 BACKLOG (Vol. 737)

This material dates from the 1968-14 September 1969 period and is arranged by subject code, according to the 1968-1976 Priority Correspondence classsification system.

1969-1972 BACKLOG (Vols. 737-738)

This material dates from 15 September 1969-1972 period and is also arranged by subject code.

1975 BACKLOG (Vols. 506-521)

As noted above, this material dates from the period when the PMO was preparing to introduce a revised classification system, as well as a new correspondence accessioning system. The first part of the material is arranged chronologically by accession code; the second part is comprised of correspondence and then memos arranged alphabetically by correspondent's name; and the third part consists of a small run of miscellaneous subject files.

1976-1978 BACKLOG (Vols. 738-739)

This material represents the backlog from the 1976-1978 Priority Correspondence and consists largely of uncoded letters arranged in chronological order. It should also be noted that the Correspondence Division Series, MG 26 O 16, also contains some backlog material from the 1968-1976 period.
