Accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the Transportation Safety Board, but where the majority was inherited from other institutions. To a large extent, this collection qualifies as a 'legacy collection,' because so much was inherited from predecessor institutions (Transport Canada for Marine and Air, Canadian Aviation Safety Board for Air, Canadian Transportation Agency (and earlier iterations) for Rail and Pipeline). Mostly, these records reflect a reference collection that TSB gathered together over the years for staff to be able to consult, with some evidence that TSB staff also sometimes added material to select cases, as they may have continued to respond to questions from stakeholders and the general public about specific cases.

Textual records in the accession mostly involve material related to safety investigations. Specifically, these records can include material about Aviation Public Inquiries, Marine Public Inquiries, Railway Accident Investigations, Reports of the Inquiries of Rail Incidents, Reports of an Accident involving Aircraft, Boards of Inquiry, Aircraft Accident Reports, Rapports des faits aéronautiques, Aviation Occurrence Reports, Marine Legacy Collection Reports, Aviation Special Investigation Reports, Rapports specials sur les enquêtes d'aviation.

Videos in the accession cover a variety of subjects.
