2 scrapbooks.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of records created and used by George D. Hobson in the course of his career. It primarily contains photographs of early oil exploration across Canada, Arctic exploration and wildlife, important projects such as Polar Continental Shelf Project (PCSP) and Ice Island, Lomonosov Ridge Experiment (LOREX), the Canadian Experiment to Study the Alpha Ridge (CESAR), Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX), and the Mount Logan expedition. Other depictions: landscapes, seismic formations, aerial views, base camps, equipment and field work. Photographs also include portraits and candid shots of George Hobson, colleagues, and Inuit. Hobson's work in the arctic allowed him to build relationships with arctic communities through their local councils. There are other photographs of occasions and events Hobson attended or participated in like Students on Ice, awards ceremonies and convocations or related to the Royal Canadian Geographical Society or the Geological Society of Canada.
The fonds contains Hobson's scientific explorations records like his detailed journals (calendar books), reports, notebooks and research notes, field manuals, and correspondence throughout his career and on some of the projects above. Records also include publications, articles, and newspaper clippings Hobson authored. Other documentation like awards, certificates, speeches, and documentation on his career such as promotional letters, bibliographies, and applications. It also includes various subject files that touch on Hobson's interest from shallow engineering problems, groundwater problems to crustal investigations.

Hobson, geophysicist, was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1923. He earned his B.A. in mathematics and physics from McMaster University in 1946 and completed his M.A. in geophysics from the University of Toronto in 1948.
Between 1949-1955, he worked for Heiland Exploration Canada Limited (Edmonton, Alberta) where he was a partner in the firm. From 1955 to 1958 he was chief geophysicist with Merril Petroleums Limited (later Pacific Petroleums Ltd.) in Calgary, Alberta , with a brief stint with the Canadian Fina Oil Company. Hobson left the industry in 1958 to become chief of the Seismic Section, Geophysics Division, with the Geological Survey of Canada, in Ottawa Ontario.
In early 1972, Hobson was named Director of the Polar Continental Shelf Project and as of 1970 he also served as a consultant to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for geophysical programs in India, Guyana and Pakistan. He saw the completion of several major projects: the Sea-Ice Atlas of Arctic Canada, the Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX), the Lomonosov Ridge Experiment (LOREX), and the Canadian Experiment to Study the Alpha Ridge (CESAR). Hobson was also selected as the base commander for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society's expedition to climb Mount Logan, Yukon and measure its height in 1992. He served on the management committee for the Northern Scientific Training Program for 29 years. Hobson was also a sessional lecturer at Carleton University in Exploration Geophysics.
He pioneered seismic techniques in the Canadian Arctic being involved in the 1960s investigations of the Sverdrup Basin, Hudson Bay, Gulf St. Lawrence and sedimentary basins within Canadian Shield. Hobson has written and co-authored numerous publications on seismic exploration. He was also a member of a number of professional associations including the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Geological Society of Canada, and the Geological Association of Canada; and elected as a Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America. For his work as a scientist, explorer and leader, Hobson received many awards and distinctions including the Massey Medal (1991), Northern Science Award (1991), Camsell Medal (1998), the Golden Jubilee Medal (2002), the Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012) and the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Medal for Exploration (2014).
