Canada during the Great Depression of the 1930s and events during the term of Prime Minister R.B. Bennett (1930-1935) are the subjects of this television documentary. Journalist/historian Bruce Hutchison introduces archival footage of the unemployed, migrants, and dust storms in Western Canada. Footage also includes Prime Minister R.B. Bennett introducing his cabinet in 1930; an Imperial Economic Conference in Ottawa in 1932; broadcasts by the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission established by Bennett; and Bennett's retirement in Surrey, England. A noteworthy sketch portrays a recreated confrontation between Bennett and Arthur Evans, leader of a group of labourers from British Columbia who travelled to Ottawa by freight train in what came to be known as the "On to Ottawa Trek" to protest conditions in government work camps. Bennett's personal life, his achievements, and failure to cope with social problems during the Depression are further employed in interviews. Among the interviewees are: journalists J. Alex Hume, Charles A. Bowman, Tracy Dudington, and Sam Ross; authors James H. Gray, Hugh Garner, and Hugh MacLennan; "Montreal Star" editor George Ferguson; former cabinet ministers Walter Gordon and H.H. Stevens (Stevens was the Minister of Labour and Commerce in the Bennett cabinet); Senator David Croll; lawyer J.J. Saucier, who was secretary to R.B. Bennett; lawyer Joseph Sedgewick; A.S. McKeown; William Herridge; Bennett's neighbour, Lady Susie Jeans; J.B. Salsberg; Grace McInnis, Member of Parliament and daughter of J.S. Woodsworth, founder of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation; Canadian Communist Party member Tom McEwen; E.C. Russell, who was unemployed during the Depression; lawyer/author Frank R.
