Gulf Minerals Canada Limited : Gulf Minerals Canada Limited (GMCL), parfois appelée Minéraux Gulf du Canada Limitée, est une société d'exploration et d'exploitation de minéraux constituée en personne morale sous le régime de la charte fédérale en 1970. En 1973, GMCL est convertie en société ouverte. La société est entièrement détenue par la Gulf Oil Corporation de Pittsburgh, en Pennsylvanie (États-Unis), jusqu'en 1982, année de son acquisition par Eldorado Nucléaire Limitée, une société de la Couronne canadienne.
Les principaux actifs de GMCL - les installations d'extraction et de traitement de l'uranium à Rabbit Lake, les réserves d'uranium et les superficies d'exploration - sont situés dans le Nord de la Saskatchewan.
Le complexe de Rabbit Lake, qui commence à produire du concentré de minerai d'uranium en 1975, est détenu par GMCL (45,9 %), Gulf Canada Limited (5,1 %) et Uranerz Canada Limited (49 %). Le complexe de Rabbit Lake comprend une usine et des installations de soutien. À partir de 1981, on y trouve aussi un camp mixte pouvant accueillir 350 employés et une piste d'atterrissage praticable en tout temps à proximité. La zone de gestion des déchets (évacuation des résidus) de l'exploitation de Rabbit Lake est située à environ trois kilomètres au sud de l'usine.
L'histoire du complexe de Rabbit Lake remonte au moins à 1968, lorsque Gulf, qui détient les permis d'exploration minière de 3,5 millions d'acres dans la région de Wollaston Lake en Saskatchewan, découvre une minéralisation à teneur en uranium à Rabbit Lake. Le forage de reconnaissance a lieu en 1969-1970, suivi des études de faisabilité technique et de commercialisation en 1970-1971. L'excavation du site et les travaux préliminaires de construction (en coentreprise) commencent en 1972, avec la construction de l'usine et l'aménagement de la mine dans les années qui suivent. La route praticable en toute saison est achevée en 1974 par GMCL et le gouvernement de la Saskatchewan. La production annuelle brute d'U308 de la mine et de l'usine de Rabbit Lake est d'environ cinq millions de livres jusqu'en 1980, puis de trois millions de livres par la suite.
En 1981, GMCL déclare huit gisements d'uranium dans la zone couverte par ses permis d'exploration centrés autour de la mine de Rabbit Lake : Collins Bay A, B et D (gisements avérés), et Eagle Point, Eagle South, Raven, Horseshoe et West Bear (gisements probables). Dans cette zone, 158 000 acres sont exploités en coentreprise. Une superficie supplémentaire de 520 000 acres, principalement dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest, à Terre-Neuve, en Nouvelle-Écosse, en Ontario et au Nouveau-Brunswick, est également exploitée en coentreprise.
Le siège social de GMCL se trouve à Toronto. GMCL dispose également de bureaux et d'un entrepôt (terminal de transbordement) dans la zone industrielle ouest de Saskatoon. Le service d'exploration de GMCL loue des bureaux distincts à Saskatoon. GMCL dispose également d'un camp d'exploration permanent situé à Collins Bay, à environ 11 kilomètres du complexe de Rabbit Lake, qui peut accueillir une trentaine de personnes. En 1981, GMCL emploie 434 personnes.
