From the interview with Paul Watson: "My philosophy is one of biocentrism, that we are just one of millions of species on this planet. And I don't believe that any one species is any more important than any other species, because there are three basic laws of ecology: (1) The law of diversity: the strength of an ecosystem is dependent upon diversity within it. (2) The law of interdependence: those species are interdependent with each other. (3) The law of finite resources: that there's a limit to growth, a limit to carrying capacity. Those are the three basic laws. Any species throughout the planet's history that hasn't lived in accordance with those three laws has gone extinct. And we'd be no different. You can only break those laws for so long. So therefore we need diversity, and the crime that we're committing now is the destruction of diversity. I think that is the most serious thing we're doing right now, is diminishing diversity on the planet. We're living in a period which is now actually defined by scientists as the homicine, as a major extinction event. And we're responsible for that. But those species are interdependent. We don't know when we remove one species, what that impact will have on other species, and also upon ourselves."

Paul Watson is an animal rights and environmental activist committed to direct action and marine life conservation. He is founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which intervenes with illegal fishing and whaling activity.

Paul has never been a stranger to controversy, and has used it in the mass media to draw attention to the plight of whales, sharks, and other marine fauna. He has been arrested numerous times, on charges stemming from collisions with poaching whaling and sealing boats, but he has never been convicted of a crime.
