From the interview with Tim Smit: "When I began the idea of Eden and we started to look at what our point of difference was, what struck me pretty much like a punch on the nose-it wasn't even a slight thing-was how no botanic garden in the world had actually themselves realized or made public the single most important thing about plants. Not one of them! Nowhere did it say, "Without plants, there is no life on earth." Isn't that amazing? That's because, I guess, the botanic garden tradition, which has now being glorified into a story of conservation, was basically an arm in Britain- certainly of the British East India Company and for imperial ventures-to create wealth through exploiting rubber, cocoa, or whatever it would be. [...]

"And the war about spices and medicinal crops-and in fact, productive crops like rubber-is huge. It was just an extraordinary tale. If you were trying to make a parallel with, let's say, late 1700s or early 1800s, you're talking about these plant hunters and the organizations sending them out as being the equivalent of our dot-com billionaires now. That's the equivalent of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison-that was who these people were-because it would transform the world, these crops."
