From the interview: "It so happens that the industrialized West has spent two centuries in an oil civilization and spent a century in a chemical civilization. It forgot about biodiversity. Today that biodiversity is becoming such an important part of life as well as the economy; to control that biodiversity you have to turn to the cultures that have protected it and then, you have to steal what they have. Both the biological wealth as well as the intellectual cultural traditions that are embodied in that biological wealth.

"Which plants are healing plants? Which seeds give you what kind of food? So, the phenomenon of bio-piracy started."

Vandana Shiva was born in 1952 in Uttarakhand, India . Her father was a conservator of forests, and her mother was a farmer with a deep love for nature. Her parents were staunch supporters of Mahatma Gandhi, and Gandhi remains a profound influence on her thought. Echoing Gandhi, she says, "I have tried to be the change I want to see."
