From the interview with David Montgomery: "If you think about soil the way a geologist does, you start to come to think about it almost as a strategic resource, and we're fundamentally mining soil to support our agricultural enterprise at present. And yet soil is the basic resource that supports life, all terrestrial ecosystems. It's the way that organic matter gets mixed with mineral matter to create a fertile substrate that feeds more life, and yet we tend to look at it as dirt-thus, the title of the book. It's really one of the most incredible substances, fertile soil. It's really what we derive our living from, and yet if you look at it on a planetary scale, we've been essentially mining soil to feed our agricultural enterprise for close to 10,000 years now and it doesn't form all that fast. So, if you look at it in terms of a geological pace, it's a change that's sweeping the planet, but at a very slow rate and very much under our control."

From The Green Interview website: Dr. David Montgomery, distinguished geologist, part-time rock musician, and author of King of Fish: The Thousand Year Run of Salmon, and also of Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations.

While our radar screens are focused on global warming, peak oil, and biodiversity loss, David Montgomery says we may be missing what he calls the "most basic environmental change sweeping the planet"-soil loss. Conventional agriculture is eroding and degrading the earth's most productive soils at a rate that will ultimately "undermine civilization," he says, unless society rethinks the way it treats this absolutely fundamental resource.
