From the interview with Alberto Acosta: "There were other important experiences of resistance as well, like the Sarayaku community that confronted both the oil companies and the state to stop the destruction of their forest. The significant thing about this is that in addition to generating resistance and important cases at the national and international levels, at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, there were also proposals for alternatives, proposals for life from the community. All of this generated the atmosphere that led, by the year 2000, to public discussion of a moratorium on oil production. We proposed that there be no more oil exploitation in the Amazon. In 2004 this proposal became the Yasuní-ITT when the government proposed oil extraction in the Yasuní region. From there the Yasuní-ITT proposal was developed in 2004/ 2006. When the Correa government came to power the initiative was already underway and I was responsible for the project. I had already been working with these groups for a very long time, but at that time, as minister of energy and mining I was in charge of presenting the project within the government, which was accepted by the president, and the Yasuní-ITT project began implementation. Unfortunately, six years later, President Correa's government no longer wants to pursue the proposal and has sacked it. This not only impacts what might happen in the region; it is also significant for what it represents in terms of respect for Ecuador's constitution."

From The Green Interview website: "Alberto Acosta, Ecuador's former minister of energy and mining, chairman of the constituent assembly which enshrined the rights of Mother Nature in its constitution, and author of Ecuador's offer to forgo oil exploitation in the Yasuni national park. In 2013, he ran for president of Ecuador. In Spanish, with translation.

"Alberto Acosta is an Ecuadorian economist and the country's former minister of energy and mining. He was the driving force behind the ground-breaking Yasuní-ITT Initiative, an offer by Ecuador to fight climate change by forgoing oil exploration and production in a large tract of untouched rainforest. Acosta is also the ex-president of the Constituent Assembly responsible for drawing up the now famous Montecristi Constitution, which took effect in 2008 and established protection for the rights of nature. Acosta ran unsuccessfully against Rafael Correa for president in 2013-one of eight presidential candidates. He is currently a researcher at FLASCO-Ecuador (Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences)."
