This series contains records pertaining to Allan Rock's mandate as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (Nov. 1993 - June 1997). During this period, significant changes were made to the Criminal Code of Canada and the Canadian Human Rights Act, including the modernization of Canada's sentencing regime, strict gun control and anti-gang provisions. Allan Rock also tabled amendments to the Young Offenders Act introducing tougher sentencing guidelines in addition to legislation overseeing the first major overhaul of the Criminal Code since 1985. Related to gun control, he proposed the mandatory registration of firearms and a ban on certain military and paramilitary weapons. Finally, he reaffirmed his intention to tackle the controversial issue of amending the Canadian Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination in areas of federal jurisdiction based upon sexual orientation. The series' records consist of, but are not limited to, memoranda, correspondence, trip itineraries, reference documents, invitations, extradition papers, briefing notes, ministerial summaries, clippings, reference materials, litigation cases, ministerial procedures, governmental publications, surveys, and minister Rock's personal handwriting notes.
