Fonds consists of photographs taken by Private Hugh John Ross (regimental # 76277) during the First World War.

These photographs were taken in France in 1916 and 1917 and include views of battlefields, graves, and rear areas around Rosières, St. Eloi, Vimy, Arras, Ypres, Agny, and Boisleux-au-Mont. Canadian forces fought important battles at these locations.

Ross, Hugh John, 1893-1947 : Ross was born in Scotland in 1893 and trained as a 'druggist' or pharmacist before immigrating to Canada. He attested into the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Vancouver in November 1914, and served in the 29th Battalion, a unit raised originally in the Vancouver area that was known as 'Tobin's Tigers' because of the number of battles in which it took part. Ross served throughout the war, during which he was twice wounded in combat. He returned to Canada in 1919 and settled in Regina, where he died in 1947.
