The series documents the role of the Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters (CCPFH) in the establishment and operation of the World Forum of Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers (WFF).

The series documents the correspondence, planning, funding and coordination related to the WFF general assemblies; meetings of coordination committee; the observance of World Fisheries Day (WFD); research and responses to global fishery concerns (such as pollution, environmental concerns, industrial over-fishing, etc.); and related topics.

Also included are files that document the 1995 Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) meeting where the CCPFH and other organizations had the first discussion of creating a global organization.

The series also includes files on some of the organisations that were members of the WFF.

Records include proceedings, minutes, agendas, constitutions, pamphlets and correspondence.

World Forum of Fish Harvesters and Fishworkers : The World Forum of Fish Harvesters and Fishworkers (WFF) (in French: Forum Mondial des Pêcheurs et Travailleurs de la Pêche, or FMP) was founded in 1997 as "an international solidarity network dedicated to protecting the world's wild fisheries and the coastal communities that depend on them for their livelihoods."

The WFF had its roots at the meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, United Nations) in Quebec in 1995. Discussions were held by organisations that represented fish harvesters. The Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters (CCPFH) was a founding member of the WFF.

In 1998, the WFF marked the first World Fisheries Day, intended as "a day to press for change in fisheries management to protect fish stocks and communities that depend on them."

The WFF held general assemblies in 1997 (New Delhi, India), 2000 (Loctudy, France) and 2004 (Lisbon, Portugal). The coordination committee met in 1998 (Namur, Belgium), 1999 (San Francisco, United States), 2000 (Loctudy, France), 2001 (Valparaiso, Chile) and 2003 (Cancun, Mexico and San Salvador, El Salvador).

The head office was originally in Ottawa. In the 2010s, the head office moved to Kampala, Uganda.

"Fishing people are accustomed to the uncertainty of earning a livelihood from the sea. For generations they've seen catches ebb and flow [...]. But for the first time in human history fishing people around the globe now realise that wild fish stocks could actually disappear forever. A few short decades of industrial over-fishing are all it took to prove beyond any doubt that stocks could be fished to extinction. Industrial over-fishing has also laid bare the huge gaps in our knowledge about the marine environment. The scientific models and management methods that were supposed to guarantee sustainable harvesting continue to fail us one after the other [...]." (From the WFF World Fisheries Day pamphlet, 1998.)
