File consists of photographs from the Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Exploring Expedition in 1858. See item-level descriptions for information about individual photographs. The expedition was led by Henry Youle Hind, who was instructed to gather information on the geology, natural history, topography, and meterology of the region. The expedition travelled by steamer and canoe to the Selkirk Settlement on the Red River, where they began the main task of the survey. From there they travelled approximately four thousand miles by canoe, freighters' boats, horseback and ox-cart. They explored the valleys of the Souris, Qu'Appelle, Assiniboine and South Saskatchewan Rivers, overland through the Turtle, Duck and Riding Mountains, and north along the shores of Lake Winnipeg and the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Humphrey Lloyd Hime was the photographer and his photographs are some of the first taken in western Canada. The photographs are the original prints submitted with the report on this expedition, and no other photographs from this journey are known to exist. Subjects include: landscape views; churches, stores, and homes at the Red River Settlement; Hudson Bay Company forts; First Nations and Métis people; and members of the expedition party. The photographs were immeditately recognized for their beauty and informational value, and were shared internationally in the Illustrated London News, as well as through various exhibitions and displays. The location of the original glass plate negatives remains unknown.

Custodial history:

Although this expedition was not led by the Geological Survey, these photographs were acquired for the GSC Photo Library and added to their collection. Prior to transfer to the archives these photographs were bound into an album with some maps. The album was unbound for conservation purposes and the maps transferred to the National Map Collection.
