Slocan Valley miners' strike : In 1899, after the government of British Columbia enacted an eight-hour workday for miners, mine operators and mining unions could not agree on a new wage scale. The strike lasted for six months. Another issue in the dispute was the Alien Labour Act: during the strike, some of the owners brought in non-unionized workers from the United States to work in the mines, which the union claimed was contrary to the act. The strike was settled in February 1900.
