Record information – Details Fonds/collection:COMMUNICATIONS, ENERGY AND PAPERWORKERS UNION OF CANADA FONDSAccession:2023-0089Media:VideoPart:1 of 1Production date:2000Description:This movie consists of a union meeting discussing the upcoming changes that the company would like to make to the pension plan. The discussion is difficult to hear and the camera work is less than ideal. There is also an interview with Fred (the head of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union). He discusses how the union started at Avesta (Brent Jones contacted them) in 1998. When the vote happened for the union to start only 52% were in favour. Once management started to layoff people, including Brent, the workers began to see the benefit that the union would bring. The workers were tired of working so much overtime when there were, people laid off, so they refused to work it. Later it was written into the collective agreement that if there were people on layoff, they would be the ones to be offered overtime first, so they could start working again. It was through that shift, that a real ‘Brotherhood’ started to take shape within the planet. <28mn 58s>Language:EnglishNotes: -
