After graduating from university, Charles D. Gonthier practised law with Hackett, Mulvena and Laverty, a firm in Montréal. The documents he produced as a lawyer were kept by this firm and by various courthouses in Montréal.

This series contains other types of documents. First, there is a small amount of personal correspondence dating from 1952 to 1974. A few letters deal with his appointment as Queen's Counsel on January 27, 1971.

Several files relate to his involvement with the Canadian Institute of International Affairs. Charles D. Gonthier represented Canada during a visit to the United States organized by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Folder 5 contains the manuscript of his travel account, published after this visit (see also the photographs taken by him: container 117, photos 4 to 17). From 1956 onward, he was the institute's honorary secretary (see folder 8 in container 69).
