The documents in this series show that, from a young age, Charles D. Gonthier made a name for himself across the country through his participation in various organizations, such as the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice and the Canadian Judges Conference. He served as president, vice-president or member of the board of directors of these legal associations and organizations. The files cover a period of 55 years of work on groups, councils and committees. His work for these organizations was carried out in tandem with his role as a judge.

Charles D. Gonthier practised his profession at a time of reform of the Civil Code. In the early 1960s, the Civil Code Revision Office was established in Quebec. Its purpose was to adapt century-old provisions to new social and economic realities.

This office, along with the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice and the Law Reform Commission, created in Québec and Ottawa during the 1970s, called upon many experts. These bodies required the direct involvement of new jurists and practitioners as research assistants, secretaries or working group chairs.

One such expert was Charles D. Gonthier, who was involved with the Junior Bar of Montréal (1960s), the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (1970s and 1980s) and the Canadian Bar Association. During the 1990s, he was involved in international organizations including the Association des Cours constitutionnelles ayant en partage l'usage du français, the International Law Association and the International Commission of Jurists.
