Day 9: Clayton Logan from New York State gives opening greeting in Seneca. Jake Thomas speaks about similarities in various Native languages; description of fires of all nations, where they came from; loss of fires from some nations and loss of oral stories as to why those fires went out; notes that the Great Law is the foundation of Hodeosaunee culture; summation of clan mother role; description of how to elevate a clan mother; description of how to prepare for a condolence ceremony.~Jake sings some of the songs of condolence ceremony; singing of the Peace Hymn, sometimes called the national anthem; introduces concept of faith-keeper; further description of condolence ceremony about the wampum, bringing it across the fire; speaker will tell the chief his duties and responsibilities and will tell the people how to respect the chief; prohibition on alcohol; instruction to love your family and your nation; discussion of use of wampum in ceremony; deputy to guard the tree and step down on death of chief; after ceremony, everyone is to socialise; Jake Thomas thanks everyone for coming and for listening. <134mn 58s>
