But between the artist and the inventor we have a practical cook. That's the person who knows how to cook fresh pumpkin after it's removed from the jack-o'-lantern and before it's made into pumpkin pie filling. This is the way the practical cook prepares fresh pumpkin. Remove the seeds and scrape out the flesh from the pumpkin with a spoon. Cut the vegetable in small pieces and cook it in boiling salted water for 25 to 30 minutes, or until tender. Then drain the pumpkin and mash. It's now ready to be used for that special pumpkin pie.
