If you've been upset when you see grocers setting frozen meats in the meat counter and letting them thaw, it's time to take heart. As of September ist new federal legislation comes into effect to benefit the shopper. Retailers who thaw frozen meat, fish or poultry, then sell them as fresh food, will be forced to label their merchandise "previously frozen". These words must be added to either the principal display panel of the package, or to a sign adjacent to the thawed food. Meat which has been thawed will be perfectly safe to eat or refreeze if you take several precautions. First of all, check the temperature of the refrigerated meat case. If this is 40 F or lower, the food will be at a proper refrigerator storage temperature. Then look for the load line in the refrigerated cabinet. Foods piled above this line will not be held at a low enough storage temperature. It's wise to pick up previously frozen foods last on a shopping trip. Whenever possible select packages of meat, fish or poultry which are still partially frozen over those which are completely thawed. The partially frozen products will stay cool longer. At the checkout counter, try to hatre meats packaged in double bags, or place them next to frozen foods. Then hurry home, and immediately transfer the food to the refrigerator or freezer. If you've taken these precautions, it is safe to refreeze thawed meat, fish or poultry. However you may find these will be less juicy than if they'd been cooked and eaten immediately. <1mn 38s>
