Apple juice is one of the most frequently purchased fruit juices in Canada, but some of us may wonder at times exactly what we're buying. Regulations state that pure apple juice may be derived only from freshly squeezed top quality apples. If a can is labelled "Apple Juice from Concentrate", the pure apple juice was concentrated by heat for storage or shipping, then it was re-liquified before being sold. Additional apple extracts may be added to "Apple Juice from Concentrate" when it is re-liquified but the end product still contains only juices"from the apple. There is no reference to sugar content on the label of a can of apple juice and this has caused concern, particularly among diabetics who need to regulate their sugar intake. No sugar can ever be added to "Pure Apple Juice" or "Apple Juice from Concentrate". The only sugar present is that which occurs naturally in the apple. On the other hand products labelled "Apple Drink"will have sugar and other compounds added to create a unique flavor. Apple juices can vary in their quality. Your guide is the grade mark. Apple juices are graded Canada Fancy or Canada Choice. If a juice is labelled Canada Fancy, it will be slightly thicker and sweeter than a Canada Choice juice. In addition it will have a stronger flavor and more bite because of a slightly higher acid content. <1mn 26s>
