The 1974 dairy, meat, fruit and vegetable outlook as seen by economists at Agriculture Canada, contains predictions as to what may happen to retail prices for these products this year. Demand for fluid milk is expected to rise during 1974, but federal-provincial agreements for consumer subsidies will help restrain price increases. Shortages in milk supplies and a rise in fluid milk sales have decreased the milk available for butter and cheese. Consequently prices of these products may rise in 1974. While uncertainties in beef supply and demand make forecasting difficult, beef prices are not expected to reach the record highs of last summer. During the first half of 1974, pork output may be lower and prices higher than during the same period in 1973. Prices in the second half of the year are expected to average below the record high prices of late 1973. Poultry is still an attractive alternative to red meat. Chicken broiler prices are expected to decrease in early 1974, but by mid-year, prices will probably rise again as the current high storage stocks are reduced. Turkey prices are expected to weaken in the first half of 74 with increases in supply. Egg prices will be adjusted by the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency through the year in response to changes in production costs. There was only a moderate supply with a very strong demand for fresh apples. Consequently prices for apples will remain well above last year's level. We can expect to pay more for all processed fruits in 1974 but the higher prices may be particularly noticeable on apple products, since processors are paying record high prices for the raw fruit. With a moderate supply and strong demand potato prices will remain well above last years levels. Last summer's crop of other vegetables was above that of the preceeding year, and as a result, you may have noticed some price declines in late 1973. However a strong demand for fresh and processed vegetables has now pushed up prices of these products. There are good stocks of Canadian onions, carrots, cabbage, rutabagas, beets and parsnips, but prices will probably rise moderately in 1974 due to strong consumer demand. <2mn 26s>
