Milk has always been a necessity for children and Canada's Food Guide states that children up to 11 years should have 2 1/2 cups of milk daily. On the other hand,the price of fresh whole milk has been increasing and some families may find a saving by getting the kids to drink reconstituted powdered skim milk. Reconstituted skim milk powder is just as nutritious as the fresh whole milk, the only difference being that it has a lower caloric content because the butter fat has been removed. Most brands of powdered skim milk have been enriched with vitamins A and D. Getting the children used to drinking skim milk can take a little time, but here's a few hints on how it can be done. First start out by substituting 2% milk for whole milk or try mixing the reconstituted skim milk powder with an equal amount of whole milk. An important factor in the acceptance of reconstituted skim milk powder is that it be well mixed and contain no lumps. The best thing is to make up the mixture in the evening, mix it thoroughly, let it cool overnight and then serve it in the morning. Children will like it if it is served good and cold and no mention is made of the fact that powdered milk is being used. Sometimes powdered milk tends to look very light in color as compared to whole milk. If the milk is served in colored plastic mugs or in opaque glasses the children will not be able to see the light color. You can also introduce children to skim milk powder by using it in puddings, sauces and soups. In fact getting the kids to like powdered skim milk either as a beverage or used in other food products can be a money-saver for mothers.
