It seems as if everyone talks about calories, especially during the summer when a few extra pounds become more noticeable. But just what is a calorie and where do they come from? A calorie is the way of describing the energy supplied by the food we eat. When food is broken down in the body it produces energy or calories of heat and this is the "fuel" needed by the body to keep on functioning. Calories are obtained from foods which are sources of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Each gram of fat eaten provides the body with about 9 calories, a gram of carbohydrate will supply 4 calories and a gram of protein supplies 4 calories also. In other words a gram of fat provides twice as many calories as the same amount of carbohydrate or protein. The calorie content of food is affected by the amount of moisture or water that the food contains. If you are watching your weight keep in mind that most foods with a high water content such as fresh summer fruits and vegetables are low calorie choices. <1mn 19s>
