The diet of the older person in normal health should include foods of the following types; milk and milk products, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry or eggs, and bread and cereals. Besides needing 1 1/2 cups of milk each day the older person needs 3 servings of fruit and vegetables. It is a good idea to include one vegetable or fruit rich in vitamin C in the daily diet. Some good vitamin C sources are oranges, grapefruit and their juices, vitaminized apple juice, tomatoes and tomato juice, raw cabbage, broccoli, baked potatoes and fresh strawberries. Also try to include one fruit or vegetable which is rich in vitamin A. Some good sources of vitamin A are carrots, sweet potato, squash, apricots, cantaloupe, peaches, spinach and broccoli. Along with milk, fruits and vegetables, include 3 servings of bread and cereals. A serving of bread or cereals may be any of the following examples; one slice of whole grain or enriched bread, 1 cup of flaked or puffed cereal or 3/4 of a cup of cooked cereal such as oatmeal, macaroni, spaghetti or noodles. It could even be one dinner roll, one hamburger bun or one hot dog bun. Other foods may be added to the food groups we just talked about if you wish to provide extra calories. But take care not to add to many extra foods or you may find yourself with a few unwanted pounds. <1mn 59s>
