There is no special diet for older people in normal health but some diet habits may need changing. For instance after reaching 40 people begin to need less food. There are 2 reasons for this, first is the normal slowing down of bodily functions which results in a decreased need for food. The second is that most people are less active in the second half of life than in the first. Therefore it is important to decrease the amount of food eaten but to still make sure that a wide variety of foods are consumed so that the daily quota of essential proteins, vitamins and minerals are included in the diet. The older person needs 1 1/2 cups of milk every day. It may be consumed as a beverage or part may be used on cereal, in puddings or in soups. Cheese or ice cream may be used in place of some of the milk. Milk is an excellent source of high quality protein and it is the best source of the mineral calcium. This is important even for the older person in maintaining strong bones. For the calorie conscious milk in the diet can take the form of skim milk, 2% milk, or cottage cheese. <1mn 22s>
